Got a case where 415 Unsupported Media Type message was being received from an IP PBX (User-Agent: 3Com VCX7300/UMS v9.5.14.14) in response to an INVITE.

This USUALLY means that none of the SIP codecs offered is supported by VOIP service, IP PBX system or IP phone (whoever is sending that 415 message).

RFC3261 states that 415 Unsupported Media Type message response MUST contain an Accept header field listing the types of all bodies it understands so the offering side can look for a match.

In this case I don't have an Accept header in response so call just tear down after receiving 415 message.

Checking successfully completing calls I see that both sides offer the same CODECs so both sides should be able to find a common one.

Also checked packetization time (ptime) values and both sides use the same packetization value so again, there should be a match. And even if not, packetization problems usually have the effect of voice being distorted.

Then started to get into more detail and suspect that maxptime attribute may be the reason of failure.

According to RFC4566 Session Description Protocol, if attribute maxptime is not supported it should be ignored. In this case I suspect 3Com VCX7300/UMS v9.5.14.14 does not know what to do and sends back the 415 error message.

Final test will be to manipulate SDP and remove maxptime attribute from INVITE being delivered to the VCX, will keep you posted on the results.

UPDATE: Removing maxptime from SDP attributes did the trick Wink

Had this same error message when sending an INVITE that didn't offer the single CODEC that the other endpoint supported (G711A), once CODEC was added into the SDP error message was gone.
